It is Earth Day today. What can you do?

Annually, we celebrate Earth Day around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. In 1970, the first Earth Day celebrations took place in two thousand colleges and universities, and hundreds of communities across the United States. Marking half of century celebrating Earth Day, here’s what you can do for our lovely earth.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Humans have created more waste than ever with the products that we use everyday. The world generates 2.01 billion tonnes of solid waste annually, with at least 33 percent of that is not managed in an environmentally safe manner. Although it is impossible to not create any waste at all, there are multiple ways that we can reduce waste. Among some of it is to stop using single-use plastics, which includes grocery bags, takeaway cups and containers. There is always an option to buy a tote bag that we can use for our daily groceries, or when we need to have our daily fix of caffeine, we can use a reusable coffee cup for takeaways. If we may have to encounter products that are not reusable, do ensure that it is recyclable, and send it to the recycling facility, instead of the landfills.

Educate

There are many people in the world might not be aware of the importance of ways to create a sustainable community, or they might not have the access to such information. You can always share what you know about environmental sustainability, or share this article to your family and friends. If you have small kids at home, start educating them from young. As what everyone knows, it is much easier to cultivate good habits when we start from young.

Conserve Water

Water may be easily accessible and not considered an expensive resource towards many people. But we have to keep in mind that it is always important to make sure that we do not waste it. As we cannot control rain easily, we will never know one day if we are going to experience drought or not. Use only what we need. Even if we live in a place with huge amounts of water supply, we still need to go through process of sanitising the natural waters which may use up energy sources.

Eco-friendly Light Bulbs

Eco-friendly LED light bulbs are good for the environment simply because they use lesser energy to run. The increased efficiency ranges between 25% and 80% in comparison with incandescent lights. Although the figures may not seem a lot when it comes to electricity bill, but imagine how we can help the environment as part of a global citizen.

Plant a Tree

It may be difficult to purchase a tree in this Movement Control Order (MCO) period, but we can choose to have our own small herb or vegetable garden in our home. With the waste of herbs and vegetables that we use to cook our meals, we can use it to propagate new plants, and maybe we can even save a little from our grocery the next time we need to cook. It could be onions, potatoes, chillies, or any favourite vegetable of yours.

Practice environmental friendly habits daily

Such good habits for the environment should not only be done on Earth Day itself. In fact, it should be practiced every day throughout our lives. Share our habits with our family and friends; and encourage them to embrace these good habits.
