Hokkien Mee is literally translated as “Fujian noodles” but despite that, it is not really known in Fujian of China itself. Instead it is a popular noodle in Malaysia, with different variation depending on which region you are ordering the Hokkien Mee.
In the central region where you’re eating at Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, it is a stir-fried noodle and is in dark brown colour due to the soy sauce that is used. However, the Hokkien Mee which is broth-based is famous in the northern region especially Penang.
The broth-based Hokkien Mee is the one that can be found in the Michelin 2023 guide for Penang. This is known as the prawn noodle in other parts of Malaysia though.
If the Penang hawker food is your favourite, then the Hokkien Mee is the one that you should also try out.
