Street Stories: Lebuh Acheh

Official name: Lebuh Acheh
English name: Acheen Street
Hokkien name: 拍石街 Phah-tsio̍h-ke, 懸樓仔 Kuâinn-lâu-á

Story of the Street

Lebuh Acheh is almost as old as the George Town city itself. The name is given due to the Acehnese community that lived there.

It is the area of the earliest Malay community in George Town. The street became known as the second Jeddah, as pilgrims gathered here to await ship to Jeddah. This is also where the Achenese Godown is located, the first four-story building located in town, owned by Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid, who also founded the Acheen Street Mosque in 1808.
