Official name: Jalan Argyll
English name: Argyll Road
Hokkien name: 萬葛里巷 Bang-ka-lí hāng
Story of the Street
In the 19th century, Argyll Road had a sizeable North Indian community, as did the area surrounding Penang Road. The North Indians community living in the area built two places of worship in the area, namely the Sri Kunj Bihari Temple on Penang Road and the Benggali Mosque on Leith Street. Argyll Road itself was once called Lorong Benggali.
Although there is lack of sources, the street is believed to be named in honour of George Campbell, the 8th Duke of Argyll, Secretary of State for India (1868-74).
