Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery
Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery stands as a testament to humble excellence. Led by Beh Gaik Lean, this self-taught restaurant owner is a fourth-generation Peranakan. Without any formal culinary training, many of her recipes are rooted in memories of cooking by hand since age 12, later refined in factory canteens for companies like Dell and Intel, and eventually perfected in her own kitchen.
In 2013, Gaik Lean and her son, Adrian opened the restaurant which is named after her, specialises in Peranakan cuisine. The eatery soon is became known not only for its Peranakan dishes, but without pork and using halal ingredients, so it is accessible to Muslims.
In 2022, the inaugural Michelin Guide awarded the restaurant a star, a remarkable feat for a Peranakan-style venue, and it has retained that honour ever since.
