As Penang’s old generation of ferry services was terminated on December 2020, there were many ideas of repurposing it. Among them, is to convert it into a floating restaurant which is about to happen.
The idea seems to be very happening soon as there is a Facebook post by Marina de Captain Food Hall that they are recruiting kitchen and service crews for an upcoming restaurant. It is not a rumour after all as the social media account stated that they are launching Penang’s first dining on floating ferry concept.

They have even posted the 3D artist impression of the Pulau Rimau ferry functioning as the floating restaurant with a bridge crossing over from Queens Waterfront. Each of the Penang’s old ferries were named after different islands, and Pulau Rimau was one of them.
At one time, the public was frowning over the condition of the Pulau Rimau ferry which was left unattended and in a bad shape. It seems that there is a light at the end of the tunnel as the ferry will soon be revived into a dining outlet.

Expected to be docked at the Queens Waterfront 2, this endeavour aims to breathe new life into the city’s maritime heritage while providing a unique gastronomic experience that combines rich history with culinary exploration. It is an opportunity for many locals to relive their memories of this previous generation of ferry.
As Pulau Rimau ferry fleet prepares to welcome guests, it is a heartening reminder of Penang’s enduring history and capacity for creativity and adaptation.
